Head Coach - Sondra Lough

The Athletic Department of Martin Luther King High School and the school’s Athletic Director are excited to announce the return of long-time staff member and coach Sondra Lough who as been tapped to be the next – and returning – head coach of the girls volleyball program.

In the first quindecennial of King High’s history, Lough served three seasons as co-head coach of the girls’ team with Gene Krieger and was hugely instrumental in the Lady Wolves league championship in 2011 and their magical 2012 run through the CIF and state playoffs.  That season, King won the CIF championship; the Southern California Regional championship, and was State runner-up.

For those efforts, she was named Co-Big VIII Coach of the Year in 2011 and the Riverside Press-Enterprise Co-Coach of the Year for the 2012-2013 school year.

In 2013 Lough took over the girls’ program on her own producing 24 wins; a second-place finish in the ultra-competitive Big VIII and a CIF quarterfinal berth.  Lady Wolves Volleyball has continued its success by making it into the CIF semi-finals (Div.1AA) in 2014 and making CIF playoff appearances in both 2015 and 2016.

Before coming to King she was the head volleyball coach at John W. NorthHigh and the freshman coach at Ramona High School. She has also been active in coaching club volleyball from 2007-2013.

She took the helm of the boys’ team at MLK in 2016.  The team finished an overall record of 7-12 and 4-10 in the Big VIII league (6th place) in the program’s second year and first under Lough.

In 2017, the boys’ team finished with an overall record of 19-7 and tied for 3rd place in the Big VIII with a 9-5 record.  The team earned their first CIF playoff appearance.  Her overall record with the boys was 37-49 and in league 21-35.

Lough attended Hueneme High School in Oxnard, California, where she was lettered varsity all four years. During her time with the Vikings, the girls’ volleyball team had 48 wins and 2 losses. She was named Team MVP, and Channel League MVP and was an All-League-All-CIF performer. She went on to start four years at Boise State University in Boise, Idaho, helping the Lady Broncos to the Big Sky Championship in 1988.

Coach Lough has been a staff member at King High since 2009, she teaches Special Education, is the advisor for PAWSS Club, and is a Unified Liason/Coach for Track and Field.  Coach Lough is on the CIF Unified Sports Advisory Committee.
